The Terroir

The Terroir

The terroir where Domaine Bisconte evolves has a very strong identity due to a very contrasted natural context. The mountain ranges are 50 km to the west represented by Mount Canigou, the highest point in the eastern Pyrenees at 2,784 m above sea level, and 10 km to the east with the magnificent “Côte Vermeille” where the mountains plunge into the Mediterranean Sea. The combination of these two natural contexts brings meteorological and geological complexity which makes our terroir unique.

The floors are from detrital origins, they come from the different periods of intense erosion that have occurred since the uplift of the Pyrenean chain. Today’s soils are the result of the accumulation of more or less coarse sediments (pebbles, gravels, sands, silts, clays …). More recent geological history has shaped the last deposits by the untimely action of the rivers (the Tech and the torrents descending from the Albères) forming more or less high alluvial terraces.

Représentation géographique du Bisconte

The vineyard is spread over 3 terroirs distinguished by their geological context. There are the first 2 islets respectively at altitudes of 44 and 54 m which are located in the alluvial plain of Tech. The first includes filtering soils composed of a sandy-silty formation, the second located on higher alluvial terraces has more clayey soils and finally the third at an altitude of 73 m is located on the stony terraces of the  Aspres’s Quaternary. The soils are gravelly with a clay matrix. Vinification is now done since 2016, in a private cellar.

Planères

Different clay horizons present at low depth allow the vine to be supplied with water during the balanced drought periods. Thus, the terroir of Planères provides fruity, elegant wines with aromas of liquorice.

Grounds show significant variability in the proportions of clay, silts and pebbles. This complex terroir is therefore more sensitive to drought. It delivers concentrated, powerful wines with fine tannins. Aromas of “black olive tapenade”, signature of this land, can be found in the Syrah (depending on the vintage).

The Terroir

Domaine Bisconte

Soils of Bisconte are made up of silty-sandy alluviums that allow the vineyard to be hydrated from time to time.

Being well fed, they produce balanced, light wines with an acidity perfect for white and rosé wines.
